Agricultural Produce Market Committee, Sangamner

The Sangamner Agricultural Produce Market Committee was established on 19-11-1959, and its actual functioning started from 01-09-1962. Before 17/08/1988, the jurisdiction of the Market Committee covered two talukas: Sangamner and Akole. Later, the Government divided the Sangamner Market Committee and established two separate Market Committees for the two talukas, Sangamner and Akole. Therefore, at present, the jurisdiction of the Sangamner Market Committee is limited only to Sangamner Taluka.

On 29-04-2023, the general election of the Market Committee was held. Consequently, the elected Board of Directors assumed office. On 12-05-2023, the election of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman was conducted. Shri Shankarrao Hanmanta Khemnar was elected as Chairman and Shri Gitaram Dashrath Gaikwad was elected as Vice-Chairman. At present, the Secretary of the Market Committee, Shri Satish Madhavrao Gunjal, is looking after the administration.

Jurisdiction of the Market Committee

As per Government Gazette No. APM-10 Sangamner dated 22-04-1959, the jurisdiction of this Market Committee included two talukas: Sangamner and Akole. However, the District Deputy Registrar, Cooperative Societies, Ahmednagar, through Notification No. APMC–DV–Sangamner–Akole–14555-88 dated 17-06-1988, divided the committee and established two separate Market Committees for Sangamner and Akole talukas. These committees have been functioning independently since 17-06-1988. Now, the jurisdiction of the Sangamner Market Committee has been restricted only to Sangamner Taluka.

Regulated Agricultural Commodities

As per Government Gazette No. APM-10 Sangamner dated 13-07-1964, commodities such as jaggery, sorghum (jowar), pearl millet (bajra), wheat, paddy (husked and unhusked), chickpea, pigeon pea (tur), moth beans, black gram (udad), cowpea, safflower, groundnuts (shelled and unshelled), tomatoes, cattle (cows, bulls, buffaloes, calves, horses, goats and sheep) were brought under regulation.

Further, as per Government Gazette No. AMKT–Sangamner dated 19-04-1984, fresh vegetables, other vegetables, sweet lime, oranges, mangoes, bananas, grapes, pomegranates, chikoo, muskmelon, watermelon, papaya, guava, jujube and custard apple were also regulated. Additionally, as per Government Gazette No. APM-1-27543 dated 23-04-1994, chillies and flowers were regulated.

Moreover, as per the notification of the District Deputy Registrar, Cooperative Societies, Ahmednagar, Reference No. Panan–1 Krushi Utpadan Bazar Samiti–Sangamner Agricultural Produce 7975-05 dated 30-06-2005, soybean, tamarind and tamarind seed were also brought under regulation.

The Government has deregulated fruits and vegetables arriving outside the Market Committee premises from 05 July 2016. The Government has also abolished the farmer commission (aadat) system for all agricultural produce.

General Information

Sangamner Taluka and its surrounding region are dependent on rainfall. The entire area falls under the rain-shadow zone. Due to low rainfall, crops are cultivated using wells, canal irrigation, and lift irrigation systems. Perennial crops such as sugarcane are also grown.

Rainfall

Geographically, Sangamner Taluka lies in the rain-shadow region. Therefore, rainfall is minimal. Sugarcane and cash crops are cultivated through wells and lift irrigation. Farmers also grow fodder crops and vegetables. Farmers take good yields even with limited water availability.

Election

From 12/05/2023 onwards, the present Chairman Shri Shankarrao Hanmanta Khemnar and the Board of Directors have been managing the functioning of the committee. Shri Satish Madhavrao Gunjal is serving as Secretary, and under his supervision, all staff members have carried out their duties efficiently.

Transport Facilities

Transportation is carried out through concrete roads and unpaved roads. Goods are transported using trucks, tempos, tractors, and other vehicles. There is no railway facility in this taluka. Agricultural produce arrives at the Market Yard from the taluka as well as from nearby villages.

Future plans include developing basic and producer-oriented facilities, as well as constructing a cold storage unit at the sub-market yard at village Wadgaonpan. During the report year, a loose onion market has also been started on the lines of Nashik district. Furthermore, at the sub-market Gharagaon, land has been taken on lease at village Ambi Khalsa, where leveling work has been completed, plots have been developed, and distributed to various traders. Vegetable trading activities will begin there shortly.

Administrative

Since 12/05/2023, Shri Shankarrao Khemnar has been serving as Chairman along with the Board of Directors. They have efficiently managed the committee’s work and always safeguarded the institution’s interests. Secretary Shri Satish Madhavrao Gunjal, along with officers and staff, have also performed their duties effectively.

Staff

The institution, under the leadership of Chief Secretary Shri Satish Gunjal, has ensured efficient work through officers and employees, resulting in an increase in the institution’s income.
